Used Power Boats

When buying used power boats, be sure to heed these tips and guidelines while shopping for your pleasure craft.

Advantages of Buying Used Power boats

New power water crafts depreciate as soon as you tow your powerboat off the show room. They do so even more significantly after the first year or two. Buying used power boats can save you money and give you great value. It also means that you you will be:

  • Committing a smaller initial investment, and that you will have lower boat loan repayment to make, if you are going to take a loan to buy your dream power water craft
  • You make profit if you decide to sell a power boat you boat second new…it may actually have appreciated.

Buying a used boat usually comes with a hefty discount, and frequently, you will get more than just the boat. There's a good chance that the seller will include many accessory items, which you would normally have to buy separately, such as:

    • a boat trailer
    • life jackets
    • boat cover
    • other accessories and tools

Very often, a boat owner will “throw in” the accessories for the boat along with the price. Be sure when you negotiate buying a used boat that you are aware of everything that comes with it. Don’t just assume that because you see an item when you view the boat, that it is included.

Guidelines for Buying

Here's a list of questions that you'll want answered before buying a used boat:

  • What is the age of the boat?
  • Are there any liens on the boat?
  • Is it in good operating condition?
  • Have there been any major repairs or replacements?
  • Is anything on the boat still covered by either a manufacturer's warranty or a warranty as a result of servicing (i.e., engine, transmission, etc.)?
  • Can you easily have the boat serviced or access parts? (It might be more difficult to obtain repair parts for some older models.)

Where to Shop

Boats can be purchased through a trade-in or trade-up from a marine dealer. You can also buy a used boat through e-bay, your local newspaper classifieds, or via many online classified services. It’s a good idea to shop around and know what you are looking for prior to making an offer on a used boat. If you have an idea of what comparable boats are selling for, you will have a good idea whether or not you are getting a good deal.

Also, besides making sure the boat is in good condition, you'll want to be sure that insurance for the used boat is available at a reasonable rate. Shopping for used power boats is exciting and fun when you have tips and guidelines to follow.
